SURGERY
Look at the footage
My heart is the throbbing fist of a strange hand
Pink and red and redder a revelation
Its fingers long seaweedy strands of arteries swaying in the sea low
I am in a metal room sucking on the irons of machines
My skin pale as those blind salamanders that live in cavern pools
I feel that I am a tree a cellulose trough
Stretching into two directions
Bridging sky with earth
The soil is populated with millions of tiny black eyes
The sky is a hollow drum
My heart’s feathery fronds reach out to touch what lives
What lives is assemblages of unliving matter
Electrons
Protons
What lives is organization
Pattern
The lungs and memories remain while
Submicroscopic materials shift in and out
I feel the grains in between my toes
Waves of sand slinking over dunes
A buzzing
I came to shaking
This is consciousness
After it was over I watched the videorecording
It was six hours long
My heart was a strange hand
