ANATOMY LESSONS

There is one particular vessel that lies
beneath the skin of my arm, like
a thin rope under tablecloth. When I
was younger, I felt pain like the end

of everything, thought my veins a highway
I could cross to escape. My forearms
bear scars like a crooked ladder. What
is the composition of dark energy? When
did living things first take breath? Why
am I still in this world?

Every question is rhetorical
when the answer doesn’t matter.
Veins carry blood from extremities
to be replenished by the heart.
