SILHOUETTE 2

Black and white photograph "Silhouette 2" by Rachel Turney

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This is a black-and-white photo of a hanging lightbub with a decorative wood or wicker cover. Vertical supports and an open diagonal weave appear to form spirals in the cover. The light fixture is inside a room with a bare ceiling and a bare wall behind it. Light shines on the light fixture from an unseen window and creates an unusually clear shadow behind it. The shadow fixture appears wider than its original and shows the open spaces within the weave even more clearly. Viewers may initially mistake this shadow for a bird cage. There is a hint of a stair or balcony railing at the bottom right of the photograph.

ROUND

Black and white photograph "Round" by Rachel Turney

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This black-and-white photo shows a rock sphere with mottled dark and light patches against a background of sand or wood chips. Viewers might suspect that the sphere and its surrounding are part of an outdoor art installation or that they decorate a public garden. The sphere sits on a short runner that is two bricks wide and at least eight bricks long. The runner may connect back to a brick border or a brick retaining wall.

Artist statement: The photograph “Silhouette 2” is a commentary on body dysmorphia and that the reflection we see may not always be reality. The photograph “Round” is a celebration of roundness, which for me is an identifier of my female form. This photograph shows round as beautiful and powerful.
